Day 7 - Journal Assignment: From Chalkboards to Chatbots - My Teaching Vision in the AI Transition

From Chalkboards to Chatbots: My Teaching Vision in the AI Transition

Technology is transforming education at an unprecedented pace. As an English Teacher in the technological era, I recognize the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) not as a threat but as an opportunity to enhance my teaching practices and students’ learning experience. Currently, I am working mostly with secondary school students, who are always curious about the world but easily lose their interest in learning if the lessons are too challenging and monotonous.

Having recognized these challenges, in the long run, I plan to integrate AI-powered tools in a practical and supportive way for my students. In the next two years, AI writing assistants, speech recognition apps, and chatbots will be used in my class to personalize learning experiences for my students. For example, AI can provide immediate feedback on students speaking and writing, allowing students to learn independently while I focus on guiding their broader language development. Also, some routine tasks such as grading quizzes or sending reports to parents could be automated by AI, giving me more time to focus on customizing lesson plans or course syllabus.

Looking further ahead, over the next five years, I envision AI becoming a regular assistant in my classroom, who can co-support my students. They could help me track students’ progress, analyze data and be able to recommend personalized learning paths for students with different learning styles. I also look forward to AI becoming a consultant working with me on refining and developing curriculum, suggesting fresh and diverse perspectives for me.

In the next ten years, I hope that I can bring the world into my class by using virtual reality and AI-driven simulations to create immersive environments for practicing real-life communication scenarios, which my students are lacking.  Therefore, AI can be a great complement for my students’ learning experience. However, considering ethical uses of AI, I will encourage students to explore AI tools critically, which emphasize using AI as a tool to complement their work, not entirely taking over tasks. This vision aligns closely with the 2024 EDUCAUSE Horizon Report, which outlines key trends and considerations for the future of education in the age of AI.

As an English teacher open to innovation, I find the 2024 EDUCAUSE Horizon Report both insightful and motivating. It highlights not just the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), but also the importance of ethical, inclusive, and student-centered approaches to technology use in the classroom.

One of the most significant emerging practices is finding appropriate uses for AI-enabled technologies. The report stresses that AI has the potential to support every stage of learning—from basic understanding to creative output. However, educators must be cautious of the risks, such as algorithmic bias, academic dishonesty, and data privacy violations. The message is clear: AI should enhance teaching, not replace it, which I completely agree with. In my classroom, I already use AI tools to generate exercises, provide writing support, and offer feedback. These tools help me save time and allow students to receive support even outside class hours. However, I am always mindful of when and how to integrate them, ensuring students still engage in intensive and human-centered learning.

Another key trend is the emphasis on AI fluency. This is more than just using AI, it’s about understanding how it works, recognizing its limitations, and using it ethically. I believe developing AI literacy among students is crucial. In the future, students will need to critically evaluate AI-generated content, identify misinformation, and use tools like ChatGPT to support, not substitute their thinking. As a teacher, I must also stay curious and commit to lifelong learning to keep up with the fast-changing landscape of AI.

Looking ahead, I envision a hybrid learning environment where AI and human instruction complement each other. I see myself shifting from a knowledge provider to a facilitator of thinking, creativity, and collaboration. While AI might handle personalized instruction and feedback, I will focus on coaching students in communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills that machines cannot replicate. I believe that with a thoughtful, ethical, and student-centered approach, we can create an engaging, inclusive, and responsible learning environment - where AI and human intelligence work hand in hand.
