REFLECTION MODULE 2

The ABCD Learning Objectives Framework and Effective Web Searching

In module 2: The ABCD Learning Objectives Framework and Effective Web Searching, I was granted an opportunity to discover more about some effective web searching besides Google and also change my way of writing lesson objectives based on ABCD Framework. To be honest, this lesson has significantly transformed my normal approach to search information on the Internet and also provided me with a more critical framework for specifying lesson objectives for different types of students in my class.

To begin the lesson, my teammates and I were assigned into different breakout zooms for sharing what we have read and prepared for this module. I have read all required readings provided by my lecturers and decided to share my experience with Bing - one of the top ten popular search engines in the world. Compared to Google, Bing can provide users with quicker responses and more results than Google. Moreover, the interface of Bing is more visually appealing than other searching engines with the theme constantly changing day by day. AI is also automatically integrated into Bing's search function with the installation of Cortana - a Microsoft's virtual assistant, which can offer users with more flexible and personalized responses.   However, one thing that users should take into consideration before using Bing is their English language competence. Most of the responses provided by Bing are in English including the answers from virtual assistant Cortana; therefore,  users need to have a certain level of English to be able to use Bing effectively. Besides Bing, my teammates also introduced to me a lot of other interesting search engines such as Quora, Yahoo and The Research Gate. I was impressed with the wide access to ELT articles and journals by using The Research Gate and how to unlock the limited access to research by using Sci-Hub websites. Thanks to my friends’ sharing, I have found a lot of useful websites for finding scientific research related to ELT and also enhance my knowledge in implementing AI into teaching.

In the second part of the group presentation, the ABCD framework in writing lesson objectives was critically discussed and explored by our group.  This discussion has benefited me a lot because it helped me to recognize my misunderstanding between the element C - condition and D - degree when writing my lesson objectives. While the Condition describes the specific circumstances or context in which the learner will perform the behavior, the Degree specifies the level of performance or the criteria for acceptable performance, which can meet the objective of the lesson. After discussion, my lecturer also carefully explained these elements again to make sure that every aspect was clear and properly comprehended. Thanks to this ABCD framework, I can write a more specific and critical lesson objective rather than only using Bloom Taxonomy’s framework because it requires me to think twice about what behaviors, conditions and mastery levels that I expect from my students.

In conclusion, after learning this module, I found this section was extremely beneficial and important for educators to think back and forth before writing lesson objectives. I do believe that with the application of the ABCD objective framework, I can write more appropriate and clearer objectives for my future lessons.

  1. After reading your article, I realized that I might have made the same mistake as you regarding the "Condition" element. I think I should review the objectives I wrote and edit the condition element in my article.
