REFLECTION MODULE 4: Skill-building Websites for Reading/Writing Skills and Technology-enhanced Lesson Plans

Module 4: Skill-building websites for Reading/ Writing skills and Technology-enhanced Lesson Plans

Module 4 about Skill-building websites for Reading/ Writing skills and Technology-enhanced Lesson Plans has brought numerous insights into choosing useful websites for Reading and Writing skills and practicing writing lesson plans integrated technology.

At the beginning of the lesson, we started with a discussion section in breakout zoom as usual  and took turns to share our own findings and teaching experiences with various websites used for teaching reading and writing. I was the moderator in this lesson, so I volunteered to share about Razkids and Storybird, which are my favourite websites for teaching young learners. Both websites are very visually appealing and well-designed, allowing young learners to use without giving much assistance. Additionally, my teammates, Bao Ngoc and Thuong also share their own bookmarking websites IELTS Simon for finding extra reading resources and consulting IELTS writing samples. I was so impressed with Thuong’s sharing about a website named Breaking News English because these websites not only provide users with diverse reading articles but also supply an influx of ready-to-use exercises to revise vocabulary and check learners’ comprehension. In the second part of our group’s discussion, we did prepare and revise a lesson plan with enhanced technology. Although at first, we did make a mistake in distinguishing between “using technology as a tool” and “using technology as teaching resources”, thanks to my lecturer’s support, finally, we still could handle the problems and complete our lesson plans with appropriate application of technology. A very provoking question has been raised during our discussion by Thuong. She was concerned that some technical problems might happen unexpectedly during class time, and what the teacher should do to handle this problem. Having discussed this problem in 5 minutes, our group has come to the conclusion that it is imperative for teachers to prepare some alternative activities and also need to check facilities’ conditions carefully before conducting the lesson.

Admittedly, I really appreciated this lesson because in current society, integrating technology into teaching is extremely significant. By applying these websites in teaching, I can save a lot of time for creating learning activities for my students and also foster my students’ learning autonomy outside the classroom. I normally assign Baamboozle or Quizizz for my students to revise knowledge at home. Additionally, recognizing the benefits of Razkids story in enhancing students’ reading skills, I sometimes assign Razkids stories for students to read at home with their parents and record their shadowing along the video. These stories are not only beneficial for my students’ reading comprehension skills, but they also educate them with a lot of implied meaning messages. From my own perspective, acquiring language should be aligned with educating morality and developing cognition. As a result, Raz kids website has perfectly matched my expectation.

In terms of integrating technology in teaching writing, I highly recommend using the website: Storybird to motivate your students' writing. Previously, it was very difficult for me to teach this skill to young learners due to its complexity and monotony. However, thanks to this website, it has helped me a lot in motivating my students to participate in practicing writing outside the classroom. By allowing the freedom in choosing topics and writing creative stories with their own styles, my students’ participation has increased significantly, leading to enormous improvement of them in this skill.  I am so satisfied with my students’ progress at the moment and hope that in the future, this website will be updated with more advanced features to benefit learners with this demanding skill.

All things considered, teaching reading and writing has never become easy until the creation of Razkids and Storybird websites. Incorporating technology in language teaching is one of the most important 21st century teaching techniques that all teacher-being have to constantly update.
