REFLECTION MODULE 3: Aural/oral skill-building websites

REFLECTION MODULE 3

Aural/ oral skill-building websites

Module 3 about Aural/oral skill-building websites has sparked in my mind a lot of effective websites for practicing and improving listening and speaking skills. Thanks to this module, I have been introduced to various skill-building websites, which are not only useful but also engaging and interactive. These websites offer a variety of activities, such as listening exercises, pronunciation practice, conversational simulations, and interactive games.

Firstly, I was very impressed with Randall's Cyber Listening Lab website, which is a comprehensive online resource designed to enhance listening skills in English. This website offers a variety of listening quizzes classified into different levels such as easy, medium, and difficult, making it suitable for various learners’ ability ranging from beginners to advanced. These quizzes are set in real-life scenarios and feature diverse accents and speaking speeds, helping students get accustomed to the nuances of spoken English. Additionally, this website also allows learners to progressively improve their listening comprehension, vocabulary, and ability to follow spoken language of native people by providing them with authentic examples and specific real-life context. This website can be considered to be an ideal tool for middle school students to adults who are looking to improve their English listening abilities day by day. Moreover, the interface of this website is very user-friendly and simple for learners to practice at home without teachers’ guidance. Definitely, I do recommend this website for my students due to its significant benefits toward their improvement in listening skills. By practicing listening with the quizzes and interactive games regularly, I believe that my students’ listening skills will be significantly enhanced.

The second website I find extremely beneficial for my students’ speaking skills is the one named “Smalltalk2me”. This website incorporates artificial intelligence in analysing and evaluating user’s speaking ability, which can offer learners with a more holistic and constructive feedback for their performance. This website is significantly advantageous for the IELTS learners because it allows learners to record their own speaking performance and give detailed comments for each marking criteria. Moreover, it also recommends the users some effective ways to improve further and estimate the potential band score for each requirement. Obviously, for some self-studying learners, this website can be considered to be a facilitator, assisting students with constructive feedback and clear guidelines for their learning process.

Honestly, after three hours of discussing and learning, I have learnt and collected into  my Diigo bookmark a lot of useful websites for future learning.  I want to sincerely thank my lecturer for introducing to us a very effective tool for saving the links. Using Diigo bookmarks is incredibly beneficial because it allows me to organize, highlight, and annotate the valuable resources I come across. With Diigo, I can easily categorize the websites based on their focus, such as listening exercises, pronunciation practice, or conversational skills. Additionally, I can access these bookmarks from any device, ensuring that I always have my learning tools at my fingertips. This organized approach not only saves time but also enhances my learning efficiency by keeping all my resources in one convenient place.

All things considered, I must admit that these skill-building websites have played a crucial role in my English learning and teaching journey. Recognizing the numerous advantages these websites provide to learners, I hope that both my friends and I can incorporate some of these valuable resources into our teaching tools.
